Ruby Zizania
Ruby Zizania is an emerging artist based in the Gold Coast Hinterland/Bundjalung Country. Ruby’s work delves into the intersection of personal healing and the natural world, expressed through the lens of dreamlike realism. After completing her creative arts degree, with a focus on 3D animation and sculpting, Ruby embarked on an inspiring journey across Europe. Upon her return to the Gold Coast, Ruby began focusing on a more traditional and experimental approach, transitioning her practice to oil painting.
This shift was immediately fruitful; her first oil work, "Tumultuous Tranquillity," was selected as a finalist in the 2023 Darcy Doyal Art Prize. Her recognition continued into 2024, notably being selected as a finalist in the Miami Street Art Festival's fence line exhibition in June, and exhibiting in a group queer show in Brisbane, Australia. Most recently, Ruby was awarded Highly Commended for her painting,"Finding Home", in the 2025 Queer Here Exhibition at QCAD Galleries. Further celebrating this work, Ruby is currently a finalist in the 13th Prospect Prize 2025 at the Newmarch Gallery in Adelaide.
A key milestone in Ruby's development was the Level Up Studio Art Residency, a six-month program she commenced in October 2024, funded by the Gold Coast City Council. This supportive program for early-career artists provided her with a personal studio space at Mint Art House, alongside a mentorship with a professional artist. The residency culminated in Ruby successfully organising and completing her end-of-residency exhibition.
At the heart of Ruby’s art is a deep passion for psychology, mythology, nature, magic, spirituality, surrealism, and realism. Her work functions as a powerful vehicle for self-expression, self-healing, and emotional regulation, particularly in the context of recovering from challenging relationship patterns. Her previous work centered on the element of earth, examining the complex interplay of light and shadow, an exploration that has now expanded into a larger, multi-faceted body of work centered on the four classical elements: earth, water, air, and fire.
