Finding Home

$3,000.00

Oil on Canvas
Artwork Size: 91 x 121 cm

This painting was awarded ‘Highly commended’ in QCAD Galleries, Queer Here Exhibiton and finalist in the 13th Prosect Prize in Adelade.

Finding Home is an expression of belonging, capturing Saphira Savage, a Brisbane burlesque performer in her private, safe sanctuary. The portrait's quotidian softness contrasts Saphira's out-there, comedic Burlesque persona.

The use of soft textures, gestural line in contrast to the negative space of vibrant pink, comments on the sitter and artist's shared experience of finding home and safety after a lifetime of trying to "fit in". A journey of unmasking and authenticity through their friendship and shared family within the queer, neurodivergent community, discovered through burlesque.

Performing as this alter ego within an embracing and supportive community, Saphira found her authentic, unmasked self and her chosen family. In a similar journey of self-discovery and healing, Ruby travelled across Europe and England in search of a place that felt like home. Soon after returning to the Gold Coast, Ruby met Saphira, which led to being introduced to Saphira's community of peers in Brisbane, where Ruby would also, finally, find home.
